MPI is proposing changes to the Import Health Standard: Vehicles, Machinery and Parts.

The Import Health Standard: Vehicles, Machinery and Parts (VMP.IHS) specifies the minimum requirements that must be met when importing vehicles, machinery and parts into New Zealand. Key changes to the import health standard include:

·        Adding Uzbekistan to the list of countries that must treat goods for brown marmorated stink bug (BMSB) during the risk season, as BMSB is now present there;

·        Requiring treatment for used watercraft with water ballast systems, which have been identified as a pathway for invasive aquatic species;

·        Allowing manufacturer declarations for new, non-fully enclosed trailers to exempt them from BMSB treatment requirements;

·        Improving treatment requirements for used parts to strengthen biosecurity and reduce unnecessary fumigant use;

·        Aligning requirements for used parts with those for used machinery;

·        Updating definitions;

·        Reformatting and restructuring the standard to make it easier to understand and use.

These changes will strengthen New Zealand's biosecurity while maintaining current trade on the pathway. The Risk Management Proposal: Review of the Vehicles, Machinery and Parts Import Health Standard explains how MPI assessed the options for managing risk organisms and discusses why changes to the VMP.IHS occurred.
