The draft Resolution proposes the approval of a new MERCOSUR Technical Regulation on the labelling of packaged foods, which modernizes and replaces previous rules in order to ensure that consumer information is truthful, clear, legible and adequate. The draft Technical Regulation establishes definitions, general and specific requirements for the presentation of mandatory information (including ingredients, origin, shelf life, storage and nutritional information), sets formatting criteria to ensure legibility; lays down conditions for specific cases (such as small packages, foods for industrial processing or imported products) and provides different transition periods for the various types of products and economic operators.
